Effie Lu

Class of 2018
From Xiamen, China

Effie Lu, a senior double majoring in Agricultural and Consumer Economics and Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences, really knows how to balance her time. Not only is she completing these programs a semester early, but she is active on campus as well. She is currently involved in an under-graduate research project on an aquatic invasive species and its effect on human behavior. She also works part time at a friend’s start-up company, is an active member of Students for Environmental Concerns, and last year, Effie went to Costa Rica on a study-abroad trip.

Being able to do all of this takes time management skills, which she thinks is key for success.“I strongly recommend students plan ahead for both short-term and long-term goals because things become easier when prepared earlier. I feel there are a lot of opportunities and classes I wanted to take and I wish I had more time before I graduate to take them.”

Effie feels prepared her future because of the outstanding resources on campus. “The writing workshop, career center, and the leadership center have all helped me excel at the University of Illinois. It also helps that I know all of my professors personally and can go to them when I need help too,” she says. She finds it very reassuring that the class sizes are small and that she has been able to meet most all of the people in her major.

Being an international student, Effie appreciates how easy the university has made it for her to be successful. “International Student and Scholars Services helps make sure everyone has access to the resources they need. I also really think it is cool to see and meet a diverse group of people on such a big campus.”

She has loved her time here and says, “Just the walk to class every day is something I love. I love the buildings, the trees and flowers, I even love to see the squirrels everywhere. The environment here is just a place that welcomes everyone.”
