Planning and Learning More
Studying abroad is one of the few things in life that has a nearly 100 percent approval rating. But before you go, it’s important to start planning for your experience abroad and learning more about the country you will be living in.
Getting Started
- Watch the First Steps Video for introductory videos and resources about choosing a program.
- Decide where and when to go.
- Make sure you meet the requirements of the program you want.
- Determine the costs of studying abroad, and look into scholarship opportunities.
Getting the Most from the Study Abroad Experience
- Travel as much as you can and soak up the atmosphere and culture.
- Memorize a few key phrases in the local language of each country you are visiting.
- Be confident when traveling. Fake it if necessary.
- Plan things out, but be flexible if things change.
- Know how much you are spending by understanding the currency conversion in each country.
- Estimate your costs (costs per day, what you want to see in each area) and balance your spending so you don’t run out of money halfway through your trip.
- Don't be shy about speaking a new language. You will get your point across even if your grammar isn't correct.
- With leaving friends and family, traveling to an unknown place, and meeting new people, studying abroad may be one of the hardest things you have ever done thus far. But, it may become one of the greatest things.
- Be open to the differences between cultures and be outgoing. Get involved in program or school activities.
- Meet as many people as possible.
